Car Accident Checklist - What To Do After A Car Accident

Accidents are unexpected, stressful and have a knack for occurring while we are in a hurry. Even the most experienced drivers can be involved in car accidents.

The first and most important step after being involved in a car accident is to ensure your own and others safety. If anyone is injured call 000 for an ambulance.

1. Stay Calm

Accidents are an emotional experience, whether it leaves drivers tense, upset or excited, it is best to remain calm. Due to these emotions, it is common for drivers to feel the urge to leave the scene of the accident. This is never a good idea. Regardless of who is at fault, there are harsh penalties for fleeing the scene.

2. Do Not Claim Liability

It is important to remember that even in minor accidents many drivers experience some level of shock. For this reason it is important not to discuss the details with the other party or to claim liability or fault. You should discuss this with the police and your insurance company only.

3. File a car accident report with the police

Contact police immediately after an incident. The police will then advise you whether they will meet you at the scene or if you will be required to go into the station to file a report

4. Record details

Ensure you record all other motorists’ details such as first and last name, phone number, license number, registration number, make and model of the vehicle and their insurance company and phone number.

5. Call your insurance company

After you speak with the police, call your insurance company to report the claim. This should be done in a timely manner as this is a pre-requisite for many insurance policies. Try writing down the incident as it happened in bullet points before the phone call, so you can refer to your list when describing the event.

Car accidents will never be a pleasant experience. However, those who are prepared with a car accident checklist on hand will be better equipped to deal with the situation. Always remember to stay calm, don’t admit fault, submit a police report, record the other motorist’s details, and call your insurance company. You will be back on the road in no time!
